Psychotherapy assists in coping with these challenges and addressing the issues underlying or creating the problem, so that one moves more easily through them. Where problems are episodic, the goal is to diminish their frequency, duration, and intensity; ultimately alleviating them entirely. Psychotherapy can also assist in addressing the underlying issues relating to illnesses such as autoimmune diseases, chronic pain, and cardiac or circulatory problems
Psychotherapy is indicated when a person or family unit experiences difficulties in dealing with the challenges of life. These challenges may be in adapting to a new life situation such as an illness, or relationship change. They may also be internally generated, such as depression or anxiety. In many cases, individuals are struggling to cope with dissatisfaction in their overall experience of life.
